Towards the end of this semester, all my modules have ended or going to the end. Take a glance back at what I have learned in ES2007s, I have developed a more effective communication skills and I also really appreciate the learning experiences throughout the course of ES2007s.

As what I have written in blog post one, I still think interpersonal communication skills and the skills of mastering communication networks are important to me. And I have learnt many ways to develop them, which I have never thought about. I realize that to have a good interpersonal relation, I need pay attention to a lot of details. I need know the person’s culture, and using correct verb cues and non-verb cues. Moreover, in different situation I should follow different rules, such as formal, informal and professional. Also I know that having communication goals and focus on audience will make things work more effective. What is more important, I have to express different feelings in various situations to show versatility, flair and affirmation.

Besides what I learnt above, I also have a profound understanding of the importance of communication in team throughout the process of doing report and oral presentation. A good communication really are playing the role of lube, bringing me better cooperation with my teammates, generating team spirit and helping to create a more pleasant work environment.

Overall, this course has enriched me with skills and tools, which I can practice nowadays and in the future, making me a good communicator.

BioData

I am a diligent, analytical and dependable person with a strong desire to learn and excel. From the experiences I have gained through co-curricular activities during my University years, I have learnt to be a team player and have developed leadership qualities. These activities have instilled in me a keen sense of team spirit and the desire to learn new things.

Playing handball for two years, I have leant to be a team player and how to work well with other people. We train hard and share experiences to improve our skills. Finally we won consecutive gold in the inter-hall handball competition. I always have an open heart and willing to try new things. During the freshman orientation, I was inspired by the amazing dancers. I decided to join dance club even I have no background. With days’ practices, I perform twice for the concerts on NUS Art Festival in two years. I also have developed leadership qualities as being the head of the block committee. I have organized two events throughout that year, which have received good response.

Reflecting on the Research Project Experience

Being a third year science student, this is the first time that I am doing a group project in university. There are quite a number of positive learning experiences while doing the project. And I have a much deeper understanding of the word ‘teamwork’.

First, unlike other mathematics work I done before, this is group project. I cannot do things according to my own schedule. We are required to cooperate very well and everyone need do their parts on time in order to make the project progress and successful. I did not realize its important at the beginning. When we were doing the blog posting about the topics, I posted mine about one day later. Hence, my teammates had to postpone the discussion about the topics, and delayed the searching into the new topic. I feel very sorry, and since then, I manage to finish my part on time.

Second, having the understanding from the teammates makes me feel warm. I caught a very serious illness in the middle of the project and I had to be hospitalized. When I got out of the hospital, the project was almost towards the end, and my teammates have done the most of the works. I felt woeful and did not know how to talk to my teammates. But they did not blame me and asked about my illness. I feel so lucky to have group mates like these. I picked up the most work at the end, so I will not feel useless in this team.

I am glad that I am a part in this project and I really enjoy the experience that it brought to me.

Evaluating Intercultural Behavior

One of my friends told me a story about the culture differences he experienced when he was in USA. Let’s call him Jerry. Once when his birthday came, his American friends brought him a nice cake. He was so happy. As a traditional Chinese thinking, he divided the cake and gave all the big slides to friends, leaving himself a small slide. To his surprise, all his friends ate the cake quietly, and didn’t like a Chinese courteously giving out the big slide for others and asking for a small one. Jerry didn’t feel very comfortable.

On another American friend’s birthday party, Jerry found out the way her distribute the cake is very different. Before she gave out the cake, she would ask ‘you want a big slide or a small slide?’ Being polite, Jerry said he would like a small one. And she did give him a very small one. This makes Jerry very unhappy, ‘she is so mean’. Later he also noticed that most of her friends and her took small slides, and she put the rest cake in the fridge.

From the story that he told me, we can see the way American thinking is so different form Chinese thinking. American talks and thought more simply and directly, while Chinese likes to express themselves in a more implicit way with many innuendos. Therefore, to communicate effectively with people from a different country, understanding each others’ cultural norms and values is very essential.

Potential Research Project

The three-month school holiday gives students plenty of time to do anything they wish to do, like traveling around some counties with friends, doing an internship or part-time job in a big company, learning some skills or music instrument they never thought of, taking summer school to catch up with peers, and so on. I would like to find out what are students’ choices could be and the differences between gender, nationality, course, year of study, etc. Therefore, I can find out what kind of role the school is playing, how the school can interact more with students and provide students with more opportunities to make their holidays meaningful, and I can find out whether there is a relationship with their future plans. Hence, I would like to conduct a survey regarding ‘what do students usually do in their summer holiday?’.

The survey contains questions as following:
1. Get the basic information of participator, like gender, nationality, course, year of study, etc.
2. Multiple-choice question of what things they did and what they plan to do in summer holidays, like doing internship or part-time job, traveling, studying in summer school, doing research or school projects, participating in school activities, or staying at home.

3. What are the opinions of students of current summer holidays, too long or too short, or do they want to change the time period of the holiday?
4. What information and services do the students need the school to offer for them to plan for their holidays?

5. How satisfied are the students with what services the school offers now?
6. What the students plan to do after graduation? Like go further study, go to work, go a
broad, etc.

This survey is about the students’ plan of summer holidays. In order to collect the information of students’ opinions, an attitudinal survey is needed to study this topic. They can help me to find out whether the students are satisfied with the current condition, and provide the school useful suggestions and directions of improvement.

Role A: Jerome

Jerome is very angry these days, because he finds out that his girlfriend Sharon is going out for dinner three times with Harry who is a colleague of hers. Heard this story from her friends, Jerome is very sure that Harry must be chasing her. What makes him more pissed is that she never rejects Harry’s invitation, and when he called her asking what she was doing, she said calmly as nothing ever happened, ‘having dinner with a friend.’ Sharon’s reactions are really driving Jerome crazy. He cannot stand any more his girlfriend going out with the same guy many times. He decides to have a serious conversation with her. So one day after Sharon gets off work, Jerome stops her outside the office and talks to her in a sharp and snappy tone.

Role B: Sharon

Sharon is very busy these days. Her company is launching a big project, and her partner is Harry. Harry invited her to dinner three times to discuss some problems they met in work. Sharon feels he might get a crush on her and he is taking the opportunity to get close to her. But who knows, he have never said anything, Sharon really does not care. Her mind is all about work now. Jerome is Sharon’s boyfriend. Recently Sharon finds out that Jerome is very easy to lose temper, and he keeps asking questions about what she is doing right now. Sharon does not like Jerome tracking her every day. She is tired of answering these calls. One day after work, she finds Jerome waiting outside her office, and he says to her sharply and snappily ‘what are you doing these days? Can you explain to me what is going on with you and Harry?’

What should Sharon say to Jerome? Why?

Why developing effective communication skills are important for me?

Human beings are highly socialized animals and we are interacting every second, so communication between each other is an essential part of our daily life, by which we exchange ideas and promote the progress of the society. Hence, I think that learning these skills is very important and useful for me.

On the one hand, interpersonal communication skills will be critical during my job in the future. A successful sales person is what I define myself in the future career. It is entirely possible that I will confront with all kinds of clients who can be extremely rigorous and strict. Under this circumstance, I need to convince them that my product or service can really meet their needs and help them succeed in the business, so excellent interpersonal communication skills can make me step out from competitors. Moreover, teamwork is essential in modern work relationship, so communication skills are playing the role of lube, bringing me better cooperation with my colleagues, generating team spirit and helping to create a more pleasant work environment by sharing information.

On the other hand, I also want to learn the skills of mastering communication networks. These networks generate potential benefits in daily campus life and especially later in the workplace. I am the kind of person that always has a big dream and look for more adventures. These communication networks bring me more information and provide me with more opportunities, being beneficial for my self-improvement. For example, once I had problems when I was organizing a event in the hall, I found my seniors who had rich experiences to give me useful advice on some details about timing and food supplement, etc. Or when I was participating a internship as a game host in the States, I usually asked colleagues tips about how to attract the guests to play my games.

As stated above, developing effective communication skills is crucial for me both in my future career and my campus life nowadays. I will devote a lot of energy to enhance my communication skills. It is never more than enough. (words: 346)
